Waste Reduction
Reducing Food Waste with Too Good To Go
Food waste is one of the most overlooked drivers of climate change—and one of the easiest to fix. An estimated 30–40% of all food in the U.S. is wasted every year, while millions of people face food insecurity (USDA, 2023). At the Co-op, we believe good food should never go to waste.
That’s why we’ve partnered with Too Good To Go, a global food-saving app that connects local businesses with customers who can rescue surplus food at a discounted price.
How It Works:
- We pack Surprise Bags of fresh, unsold food nearing its best-by date.
- You reserve a bag through the Too Good To Go app at a reduced price.
- You pick it up, enjoy the savings, and help fight food waste!
Why It Matters:
- Food waste accounts for 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (UN Food Waste Index Report, 2021).
- Wasting food means wasting the land, water, labor, and energy that went into producing it.
- Rescuing just one Surprise Bag prevents the equivalent of 2.5 kg of CO₂e emissions—the same as fully charging a smartphone 442 times!
Local Impact, Global Change
Our Too Good To Go partnership allows us to:
- Prevent edible food from entering the landfill
